Angola: Waiting for Pope Leo XIV

In Angola, the countdown to the much-anticipated visit of Pope Leo XIV has begun. Pope Leo will be in Angola from 18 to 21 April. It is an event that has galvanised the whole country into action—from government officials to the Catholic hierarchy, the faithful and religious institutions across the country.

Bishop Vicente Sanombo of the Diocese of Kuito-Bié has told Vatican News that he believes the Supreme Pontiff's presence in Angola will be an important milestone in strengthening national unity and reconciliation among Angolans. According to the prelate, the visit presents a unique opportunity to promote the values of peace, solidarity, and social cohesion.

A missionary Pope

Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Lubango is already organising and preparing the Catholic faithful who will travel to go and meet the Holy Father. Lubango is located in southwestern Angola, almost 1 000km away from the capital, Luanda. It is usually a journey of more than 12 hours by road.

About 500 of the faithful will participate in the celebrations presided over by Pope Leo XIV. The Archdiocese of Lubango’s Vicar General, Father Maurício Capembe, said that the pastoral initiatives related to the Pope’s visit, reflects the strong involvement of the local Catholic community during a moment of great spiritual and social significance for the country.

For his part, veteran Angolan journalist Mr Moisés Malumbu, a former professional of Vatican News - Vatican Radio, highlighted some notable aspects of Pope Leo XIV's profile. Among them, he emphasised the Holy Father’s background as a missionary.
