A friendly and fraternal gathering was held at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington on Friday, 30 January, to celebrate the 80th birthday of Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. The Cardinal offered a brief, unscripted address, thanking those present and recalling some moments of his service.

Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, read the telegram of good wishes sent by Pope Leo XIV in which he expresses his “appreciation” for the commitment shown by Cardinal Pierre throughout his long ministry “in service to the Gospel and the Holy See.” The archbishop then conveyed the greetings of Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and of the officials of the Secretariat of State.

Also addressing those present was the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, who thanked the nuncio for his mission as the Pope’s representative in the country. At the conclusion of the gathering, honours were presented to members of the Nunciature staff.
