The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote on a U.S. draft resolution backing President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

The measure would authorize an International Stabilization Force and set up transitional governance in the territory.

The United States says several countries have offered troops, though it is unclear whether the force would be tasked with disarming Hamas or serve as peacekeepers.

The plan, which last month secured a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas after two years of fighting, also raises the possibility of a Palestinian state. Israel strongly opposes that provision.

Negotiations over the text have been tense. Washington has warned that rejecting the resolution could risk renewed fighting.

The draft calls for the stabilization force to work with Israel and Egypt and for the creation of a newly trained Palestinian police force in Gaza.

Police there have operated under Hamas authority until now.

Trump’s plan halted hostilities that began Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led gunmen attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage.

Since then, more than 69,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli military action, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Elsewhere, the Egyptian Foreign Minister and his Russian counterpart held consultations over the weekend, focusing on the Washington-backed draft resolution concerning the security arrangements in the Gaza Strip.
